It was 2020 when we last were lucky enough to ski together as a family, and that was a different world. At the time, I recall seeing someone in Grenoble airport wearing a face mask and thinking what a freakish hypocondriac they were. (They weren’t, as it turned out).
We finally got the financial and lifestyle stars aligned and were ready for a shorter 4-days-of-ski trip to Flaine (a historical Haygarth landmark – the setting for our engagement in 1995!). Then, with about 3 days to spare, somehow Elsie managed to work on James M-G (and hence Katy and Finn) to get them to come along too, at the end of their mini European tour.
At the end of a ski season, it’s warm, generally, and conditions can be poor. But we struck gold with a huge dump of snow finishing just before our arrival, then 4 days of pretty undisturbed sunshine. The perfect non-storm. Yes, it got a bit slow and melty on the last couple of hours of the final day, but no bare grass, no hideous ice, and more importantly, loads of fun and laughs and skiing. Perfect.
